Isaiah 12:2-6

New International Version

²Surely God is my salvation;^(A)
    I will trust^(B) and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself,^(C) is my strength^(D) and my defense^[a];
    he has become my salvation.^(E)”
³With joy you will draw water^(F)
    from the wells^(G) of salvation.

⁴In that day^(H) you will say:

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;^(I)
    make known among the nations^(J) what he has done,
    and proclaim that his name is exalted.^(K)
⁵Sing^(L) to the Lord, for he has done glorious things;^(M)
    let this be known to all the world.
⁶Shout aloud and sing for joy,^(N) people of Zion,
    for great^(O) is the Holy One of Israel^(P) among you.^(Q)”

⁹“For I will give the command,
    and I will shake the people of Israel
    among all the nations
as grain^(C) is shaken in a sieve,^(D)
    and not a pebble will reach the ground.^(E)
¹⁰All the sinners among my people
    will die by the sword,^(F)
all those who say,
    ‘Disaster will not overtake or meet us.’^(G)

Israel’s Restoration

¹¹“In that day

“I will restore David’s^(H) fallen shelter^(I)—
    I will repair its broken walls
    and restore its ruins^(J)—
    and will rebuild it as it used to be,^(K)
¹²so that they may possess the remnant of Edom^(L)
    and all the nations that bear my name,^[a]^(M)”
declares the Lord, who will do these things.^(N)

¹³“The days are coming,”^(O) declares the Lord,

“when the reaper^(P) will be overtaken by the plowman^(Q)
    and the planter by the one treading^(R) grapes.
New wine^(S) will drip from the mountains
    and flow from all the hills,^(T)
¹⁴    and I will bring^(U) my people Israel back from exile.^[b]^(V)

“They will rebuild the ruined cities^(W) and live in them.
    They will plant vineyards^(X) and drink their wine;
    they will make gardens and eat their fruit.^(Y)
¹⁵I will plant^(Z) Israel in their own land,^(AA)
    never again to be uprooted^(AB)
    from the land I have given them,”^(AC)

says the Lord your God.^(AD)

The Birth of John the Baptist

⁵⁷When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. ⁵⁸Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

⁵⁹On the eighth day they came to circumcise^(A) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, ⁶⁰but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”^(B)

⁶¹They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”

⁶²Then they made signs^(C) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. ⁶³He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”^(D) ⁶⁴Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,^(E) praising God. ⁶⁵All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea^(F) people were talking about all these things. ⁶⁶Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.^(G)
